Tohoku
In Iwate, where wild grapes that had been growing wild in the mountains were fermented and drunk as alcoholic beverages since before the Meiji era (1868-1912), Riesling Lyon and Zweigelt (originally from Austria), which were hybridized in Japan, can still be enjoyed in addition to wine made from wild grapes.
Yamagata Prefecture, which boasts the fourth largest production in Japan, is also famous for its North American varieties such as "Delaware" and "Niagara," which are white wine varieties. Yamagata also produces the second largest amount of red wine, Muscat Baily A, after Yamanashi.
